2010 Mazda 3 Gets SmartWay Nod from EPA

The Mazda 3 earns the SmartWay designation from the Environmental Protection Agency(EPA) and is now considered as one of the greener cars blazing on the asphalt today.

The SmartWay designation was developed by the EPA to help consumers identify vehicles based on their effects on the environment through their performance.

The program gives vehicles two sets of scores. The Greenhouse Gas Score which is a scale of 1 to 10 represents the green gas and CO2 emissions of the vehicles. The other set of score is the Air Pollution Score which is based on the tail pipe emissions of the vehicle that directly effect air quality in a particular locality or region.

The 2010 Mazda 3 scores well with a fuel mileage of 25 mpg during city driving and around 33 mpg while cruising on the highway. These figures reflect the better performance of the new generation Mazda 3 compared to the 2009 sibling.

The new release will be powered by the MZR 148 hp 2.0L engine that has a 135 lb-ft torque. The engine consists of a lighter aluminum block and operates on a 4-valve per cylinder configuration. The engineering of the engine guarantees maximum efficiency, minimal emission, and excellent combustion.

The Japanese car manufacturer committed in 2008 that they will try to reduce the fuel consumption of their range of vehicles by about 30% until 2015. These will be achieved through advancement of engine technology, decreased weight of the vehicle, excellent aerodynamics, and lower rolling resistance.
